The garage floor coating market has consolidated around three system types in 2026: full-flake polyaspartic, decorative metallic epoxy, and quartz-broadcast epoxy. Each does something different well.
1. Full-flake polyaspartic (most popular)
A grind-primer-basecoat-flake-topcoat stack finished in polyaspartic. Installs in one day, drives on in 24 hours, resists hot tires and pool chemistry, and the flake hides slab imperfections. This is what most homeowners want when they say "epoxy garage floor," and it's the best cost-to-durability trade-off for residential work.
2. Metallic epoxy
Pigmented metallic epoxies poured over a base color to create a marbled, three-dimensional finish. Stunning in a finished garage, showroom, or basement — and every install is unique. More expensive and slower to install than flake, and requires a clean, well-prepped slab to look right.
3. Quartz-broadcast epoxy
Colored quartz aggregate broadcast into an epoxy base and sealed with a clear topcoat. Extremely durable, naturally slip-resistant, and the finish looks great in workshops, mudrooms, and light commercial spaces. It's a step up in texture from flake.
What to avoid
- Big-box water-based epoxy kits — they're paint, not a coating system, and typically peel within 12–24 months.
- Any "one-coat" install without a primer — priming a garage slab is not optional.
- Contractors who won't run a moisture test before quoting.
